Today's situation - A small core group of Firefighters respond to over 1,300 calls per year. It is harder and harder to attract and retain volunteer firefighters. The Firefighters need help. Many of the responses are at (or below) the minimum staffing levels.
The District believes that paying 6 additional firefighters full time (at a cost of $690,000) will solve this issue. The eventual cost of 24/7 coverage would become $4,240,044
There are much more efficient ways to increase manpower and increase overall firefighter safety. And guarantee a rapid response with a full crew.
Increase the incentive compensation for the volunteer / on-call members.
Percent Calls Bonus
30% $250
40% $500
50% $750
60% $1,000
70% $1,500
80% $2,000
90% $2,500
Per Call (Tier 2) is doubled from $38,000 to $76,000
Increase the use of part time paid coverage to supplement the career staffed shifts.
Shifts would include Sunday – Saturday evening and overnight shifts. Goal is 24 x 7 coverage
Once 24 hour coverage is obtained, change all EMS Assist calls to still alarms
Incentive for each toned out fire call would therefore increase
Instead of using a 1.3 Million Dollar Fire Engine and a crew of four Firefighers, change the response to a Part time paid firefighter with an EMS Fly Car,
Previous use of this option met with great success.
All EMS Calls become still alarms, the entire Department is no longer toned out.
Overall number of toned out calls is reduced from 1,32

All EMS Calls become still alarms, the entire Department is no longer toned out.
Overall number of toned out calls is reduced from 1,324 to 622 (Year 2020 data).. The remaining calls are the "more important" calls, emergency responses that require a full crew.
Incentive for each toned out fire call increases by over 320%, making it easier to retain the existing volunteer firefighters.
With the proposed changes adopted (Option 1 and Option 3) the total incentive pay would greatly increase, with the shift of EMS to a "Fly Car" response.
